DEFINITION OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

Domestic abuse is about power and control, how one person uses an intimate relationship to control their partner or former partner. Domestic abuse includes a range of behaviour which can be physical, sexual, psychological, economic or emotional.

Research shows that domestic abuse is most often experienced by women and perpetrated by men. Any woman can experience domestic abuse regardless of age, race, ethnic or religious group, class, disability or lifestyle. Domestic abuse can also take place in lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgender relationships, and can involve other family members or children.

Most domestic abuse is repeated and follows a pattern. Often it tends to worsen over time, and to continue beyond the ending of the relationship; it is aimed at reinforcing the perpetrator’s authority and control.

CHILDREN’S SUPPORT SERVICES

Newark Women’s Aid employ a Children and Young People’s Support Worker who works directly with children in the refuge and a children and young people’s Outreach Support Worker who works for 13hrs. a week within the local community. OUTREACH SUPPORT

The Outreach Service supports women with or without children living in the community who do not choose to go into refuge, or for whom refuge is not appropriate for their needs.

The aim of the service is to enable women to stay as safely as possible in their own home.
